Pass rush is key to a successful defense. The Green Bay Packers are set at the starting positions, but have they got enough depth?

Should the Packers add another pass rusher as they did at inside linebacker in 2021 by signing De’Vondre Campbell?

Let’s look at the moves the Packers have made at edge rusher so far this offseason, and whether more work is needed.

Currently on the roster

Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Kingsley Enagbare, Tipa Galeai, Jonathan Garvin, Randy Ramsey, La’Darius Hamilton, Chauncey Manac, Kobe Jones

Offseason moves

The Packers moved on from Pro Bowl edge rusher Za’Darius Smith before the start of the new league year to create cap space. Smith signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Green Bay gave Preston Smith a contract extension, which also allowed the team to lower his 2022 cap hit.

In need of some pass-rush depth, the Packers drafted Kingsley Enagbare in the fifth round of last month’s 2022 NFL Draft.

Improved from 2021?

Yes — only because Za’Darius Smith barely played.

If Smith is healthy and back to his best this year, the Packers will miss him. But this question is whether the Packers have improved from 2021. And considering Smith played in only two games, the answer is yes.

Part of that will be the continued development of Rashan Gary, a rising star in Green Bay’s defense, and also the arrival of Kingsley Enagbare and the return of Randy Ramsey from injury.

Key player

Rashan Gary.

Gary played at a Pro Bowl level down the stretch in 2021, making three sacks and seven quarterback hits in the final three regular season games.

He then made two sacks and three quarterback hits in the playoff game versus the San Francisco 49ers.

It would not be surprising if Gary put together an All-Pro 2022 season.

Position outlook

There is a possibility Green Bay’s pass rush will improve a lot in 2022.

Defensive line additions Jarran Reed and Devonte Wyatt can both help add interior pass rush to the defense.

Fifth-round pick Kingsley Enagbare should also make an impact as a backup pass rusher in his first season.

Depth at edge rusher is still slightly concerning, so the Packers should consider signing a veteran. A talented, experienced player who can play a backup role and can come up with important plays in big games.
