Packers 2022 roster preview: Important third year for Josiah Deguara
The Green Bay Packers‘ tight end room remains mostly the same this season.
Josiah Deguara is entering an important third year. If he can continue to improve, it could lead to more opportunities on offense.
But if he struggles, it’s possible the Packers start over at the tight end position following the 2022 season.
2021 stats
Deguara played in 16 games with two starts. He caught 25 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. According to Pro Football Reference, 204 of his 245 receiving yards came after the catch.
2021 season review
Deguara began the year as a backup but saw his snap counts increase when Robert Tonyan suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Deguara made a slow start, but that could be in part due to the fact he was coming back from a torn ACL.
He did make some big plays down the stretch, including a 62-yard touchdown catch on a screen pass from Jordan Love in the Week 18 game versus the Detroit Lions.
Overall, it was a solid second season for Deguara, but the former third-round pick needs to become more consistent.
Will he make the roster?
Yes, and he could even be a starter if Robert Tonyan misses the start of the season. Even when Tonyan is fully healthy, Deguara will have a role to play on offense.
What to expect in 2022
Deguara has a big opportunity in front of him this year.
Tonyan could miss the start of the regular season as he recovers from a torn ACL. Marcedes Lewis is 38 years old.
Deguara can be used in a number of different ways in the Packers’ offense. He can line up at fullback and block or out wide as a receiver.
The Packers didn’t make many changes at tight end this offseason, which means Deguara will get plenty of opportunities. It’s over to him to make the most of them.
