Rookie cornerbacks often struggle. Once Jaire Alexander and Kevin King went down with injuries last season and Eric Stokes was promoted to starter, many feared the worst.

There was no need to. Stokes rose to the challenge and put together a fantastic first year in the NFL.

Stokes broke up 14 passes and intercepted one, while allowing under half of targets to be completed, per Pro Football Reference. He also gained valuable experience by making 14 starts.

According to Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus, Stokes “allowed the lowest rate of separation on his targets leaguewide”.

Stokes had his rookie moments, such as allowing big completions to DeAndre Hopkins in Week 8 and Justin Jefferson in Week 11. But they are star wide receivers. It happens.

Stokes also missed turnover opportunities frequently. The best cornerbacks in the league punish quarterbacks for bad throws and intercept them.

But at his best, Stokes showed Pro Bowl potential. He improved as the season went on and looked like a CB1.

The exciting part? He is only going to get better as he gains confidence and experience.

Stokes’ rookie season was every bit as impressive as Jaire Alexander’s in 2018. He is the Packers’ top breakout candidate this year. Stokes has star potential.
