Packers defensive line near top of Pro Football Focus rankings
The Green Bay Packers‘ defensive line could be dominant in 2022.
The line performed at a high level last season. Key to their success was Pro Bowler Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry, who had a career year. They had nine sacks between them.
At edge rusher, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith combined for 18.5 sacks.
This spring, the Packers have added Jarran Reed, Devonte Wyatt, and Kingsley Enagbare. It gives Green Bay one of the deepest defensive lines in football.
Ahead of the 2022 season, Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus has ranked every defensive line in the NFL.
The Packers are third in the rankings in a tier titled “Tier 1: Elite”. It’s not often we hear about Green Bay’s defensive line being elite.
Only the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders are ranked ahead of the Packers.
There aren’t many weaknesses up front for the Packers defensively.
At the interior positions, they have the choice of Clark, Lowry, Reed, Wyatt, and second-year TJ Slaton. That is a lot of talent and depth.
Clark is coming off a Pro Bowl season. Lowry just had his best year. Reed is a talented interior pass rusher. Wyatt was a first-round pick in April.
On the edge, the Packers have one of the best young pass rushers in the league in Gary and a solid number two in Smith. Engabare strengthens the depth.
The defensive front is a major reason why Green Bay’s defense could be dominant in 2022. But in actual fact, the further back you go, there also aren’t many weaknesses.
At inside linebacker, the Packers have De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, and Krys Barnes.
Campbell was a first-team All-Pro in 2021. Walker was the 22nd overall pick in April’s draft.
In the secondary, the Packers have All-Pro Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Rasul Douglas, Adrian Amos, and Darnell Savage. Few secondaries are as talented as Green Bay’s.
This entire defense can dominate in 2022. But it starts up front with the defensive line, which PFF has ranked as the third best in the NFL.
