Josiah Deguara
This is an important summer for tight end Josiah Deguara. He has been unable to live up to third-round expectations to date, although it’s still early in his career.
Deguara missed most of his rookie season due to injury. In year two, he provided some solid play as a backup option. But not much more than that.
The Packers re-signed starting tight end Robert Tonyan to a one-year deal this offseason. Tonyan is recovering from a torn ACL but could potentially be back in time for the season opener.
Marcedes Lewis also returns this year. He will continue to play a vital role as a blocker.
Tyler Davis’ name has come up throughout the summer as a player to watch. If he impresses at training camp, a spot on the 53-man roster could be his. Dominique Dafney has also stepped up when the Packers have needed him in the past. He will compete for a roster spot.
Will Deguara make the 53-man roster? Most likely, yes. Should it be considered a guarantee? Absolutely not.
If Deguara is outplayed by Davis and Dafney this summer, the Packers may be forced into a tough decision.
But as a former third-round pick, Deguara could still have some trade value.
