Packers: Three potential surprise cuts at training camp
TE Josiah Deguara
In all likelihood, the Packers will give tight end Josiah Deguara another opportunity this season. The decision not to draft a tight end works in his favor.
It’s tough to give up on draft picks. In Deguara’s case, he was a third-round selection only two years ago. He also missed most of his rookie season due to injury.
However, as of yet, Deguara hasn’t lived up to the high expectations of a third-round pick.
Deguara’s versatility stood out as a reason why he could thrive in Matt LaFleur’s offense. LaFleur even said in 2020 that he envisioned Deguara playing a Kyle Juszczyk role.
While Deguara does provide versatility, he is yet to land a significant role in the Packers’ offense.
With Robert Tonyan set to resume his role as the main pass-catching option at tight end once he’s healthy, and Marcedes Lewis continuing his great work as a blocker, Deguara could be set for a backup role again.
He will also face competition from Dominique Dafney and Tyler Davis at training camp.
So, what happens if they outperform Deguara this summer? Will the Packers consider keeping five tight ends?
Cutting Deguara would be a surprise, but it shouldn’t be ruled out.
