Packers: Three potential surprise cuts at training camp
DT Dean Lowry
The Packers’ defense is better with Dean Lowry than without him. If nothing else, he adds valuable depth to the defensive line.
However, he also has a high cap hit.
According to Over The Cap, Lowry’s cap hit is $8.07 million this season, which ranks as the fifth-highest for the Packers.
If Lowry is a starter, paying that kind of money makes sense. But what if he is overtaken on the depth chart by Jarran Reed and Devonte Wyatt? It’s a real possibility.
Green Bay’s fifth-highest cap hit would then go to a backup defensive lineman.
If the team opted to move on, they could save half of that. Releasing Lowry would leave the Packers with a dead cap hit of $4.08 million.
Green Bay has a Pro Bowler in Kenny Clark. The team also invested at the position this offseason, signing Lowry and drafting Wyatt in the first round.
Second-year T.J. Slaton provides depth, as does Jack Heflin and seventh-round pick Jonathan Ford.
The Packers have enough depth to make it work without Lowry.
Lowry is coming off the best season of his career, and outside of the cap savings, it wouldn’t make much sense to move on. But it’s something the Packers could consider.
