The Green Bay Packers have benefited from continuity at the safety position in recent years.

Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage have been an excellent starting pair at safety over the past three seasons.

They now enter year four together in the Packers’ secondary.

Who’s here?

Adrian Amos hasn’t missed a game in his three seasons with the Packers. He is one of the most consistent players at the position in the NFL and will again be a key player in the secondary.

Darnell Savage was a first-round pick in 2019 and has been a starter alongside Amos ever since.

There will be competition for the No. 3 spot behind Amos and Savage. Shawn Davis, a fifth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts only a year ago, appears to be a frontrunner entering training camp.

Davis will face competition from Vernon Scott and Innis Gaines.

Rookie Tariq Carpenter can play both safety and inside linebacker. He is listed as a safety on the Packers’ official website.

Expectations

As long as Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are healthy, expectations will be relatively high for Green Bay at safety.

Amos’ consistency is incredible. He is always in the right place at the right time and rarely makes mistakes.

Savage didn’t have his best season in 2021. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed a passer rating of 117.4 in his coverage, which was a career-worst. Still, Savage made nine pass defenses and two interceptions, showing his ability.

The competition for the No. 3 spot will be must-see. Do the Packers have enough depth at the position, or should they consider adding a veteran this summer?

This is something we will begin to find out once training camp gets underway.

The Packers are set at the starting positions, but depth could be an issue. We’ll have a better idea in a few weeks.
