Start with Yosh Nijman

But maybe the Packers don’t need to explore free agency. Their best option could already be on the roster.

Yosh Nijman helped Green Bay last season when David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins were out due to injury. He started in eight games and played well.

When Jenkins missed time early in the year, the Packers had a decision to make. The easy choice would’ve been to move Billy Turner to left tackle and have Dennis Kelly cover at right tackle. Kelly had the experience.

Instead, the Packers trusted Nijman to cover for Jenkins on the left side. And he delivered with an impressive performance.

Now, Jenkins’ status for the start of the season could have an impact on this.

Jenkins is recovering from a torn ACL. Like Bakhtiari, he begins training camp on the PUP list. It seems likely Jenkins will miss the start of the season. In the meantime, Nijman would be a great choice to cover at right tackle.

If Bakhtiari and Jenkins both missed time, it could make sense to have Nijman start on one side with a free-agent signing covering the other.

Either way, if the Packers need someone to step up at tackle, Nijman has shown he’s more than ready for the role.
