Packers: 3 takeaways from Day 1 of training camp 2022
Allen Lazard: The next WR1?
With Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling gone, Allen Lazard has a huge opportunity in front of him to take on the role of WR1 in Green Bay’s offense.
So far, so good.
“Who I don’t think we need any patience with is Allen,” said Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday. “I really feel like Allen is ready to make a jump and to be a number one wide receiver.”
High praise from Rodgers, and Lazard made a good start to training camp.
Throughout practice, there were many tweets from reporters like this one, where Rodgers connected with Aaron Rodgers.
Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette described it as a “trust throw”. That’s exactly what the Packers need from their WR1.
When Rodgers needs a play, he will turn to the receivers he trusts. There’s no doubt Lazard has that.
It’s day one of camp. There’s plenty more to come. But it’s an encouraging start for Lazard, who is just beginning his journey as the Packers’ WR1.
He will see a lot of Jaire Alexander in coverage during practice, and it should make for a fascinating battle. It will also show us just how ready the Rodgers-to-Lazard connection is for the regular season.
