Packers keep seven wide receivers
Under Matt LaFleur, the Packers have never kept more than six wide receivers on the initial roster. There’s a good chance that changes this summer.
Assuming everyone is healthy, it isn’t easy to decide which of this group gets cut: Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Amari Rodgers, Samori Toure.
Lazard, Watkins, and Cobb are roster locks. Watson was a high draft pick. Doubs was a fourth-rounder. Rodgers was a third-round pick in 2021.
So, what about Toure? He was a standout performer during the offseason program. If he continues to impress, how could the Packers consider cutting him?
This might be a rare situation where they have to keep seven receivers on the 53.
Packers only keep five cornerbacks
The opposite could be true at cornerback.
Green Bay has a star trio of Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas.
Shemar Jean-Charles is a second-year player and draft pick, so there’s a good case for him making the roster. Keisean Nixon was a free-agent signing and is a valuable special teams player.
But it’s hard to name one more cornerback that has to make the roster. Everyone else can be replaced. So why keep a sixth cornerback?
That can all change if a corner on the roster steps up this summer. But right now, there’s every chance they only keep five on the initial 53-man roster.
