Packers: Breaking down safety competition ahead of preseason finale
There’s a lot to play for at safety entering the Green Bay Packers’ final preseason game.
The competition for the final roster spots at safety remains wide open, especially after the Green Bay Packers surprisingly released Vernon Scott.
Outside of the two starters, which safeties look set to make the 53-man roster?
And which players on the roster bubble will give themselves a chance with a strong performance against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday evening?
Which Packers safeties are roster locks?
The only two safeties we can say will make the 53-man roster with any certainty are Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.
The two have been the Packers’ starting safeties since 2019 and will continue in that role this season.
Which Packers safeties will likely make the roster?
Shawn Davis was very close to making the roster lock section. Davis has been making plays all summer and will likely be the number three safety this season.
Who is competing for a roster spot?
Green Bay could decide to go with three safeties initially and then promote players from the practice squad. Assuming the team goes for four, there is a lot to play for in the final preseason game.
Dallin Leavitt won’t be available for that game due to injury. The Packers have a tough choice to make with him. One option would be to keep him on the initial 53-man roster, then place him on injured reserve. That would ensure they don’t lose him on waivers, and they could bring him back from IR later in the season.
Micah Abernathy impressed in last week’s preseason game. Another good performance versus the Chiefs could punch his ticket to the 53-man roster.
Draft pick Tariq Carpenter has missed time due to injury. Assuming he’s cleared to play on Thursday, he needs a big performance.
Innis Gaines and De’Vante Cross are unlikely to make the roster.
