Breaking down the Green Bay Packers’ initial 2022 53-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers have finalized their initial 53-man roster for the season.

It’s important to highlight the word ‘initial’, as we will see changes made on a regular basis. Up next, the Packers need to put together their practice squad.

With the initial 53 set, let’s look at each position.

Quarterbacks (2): Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love

As expected, the Packers keep two quarterbacks.

Running backs (2): Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon

No Tyler Goodson or Patrick Taylor on the 53. Expect one, or both, to end up on the practice squad.

Wide receivers (7): Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Amari Rodgers, Samori Toure

It’s seven wide receivers for the Packers. It was going to come down to Samori Toure or Juwann Winfree, but it’s the rookie who makes the team. Toure led the Packers in receiving in the final preseason game.

Tight ends (4): Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Tyler Davis

The Packers maintain confidence in Tyler Davis, despite his struggles in the preseason.

Offensive linemen (10): David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Yosh Nijman, Zach Tom, Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, Jake Hanson, Sean Rhyan, Rasheed Walker

Green Bay has taken a risk by releasing Caleb Jones. It won’t be surprising if he is claimed on waivers by another team. Draft pick Rasheed Walker makes the 53 after a strong performance in the preseason finale. He is a player to develop.

Defensive linemen (6): Kenny Clark, Jarran Reed, Dean Lowry, Devonte Wyatt, T.J. Slaton, Jonathan Ford

Jonathan Ford over Jack Heflin is a surprise. Heflin had a great summer. Hopefully Heflin will clear waivers and return to the practice squad.

Inside linebackers (4): De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Krys Barnes, Isaiah McDuffie

No surprises at inside linebacker. The Packers have a ton of talent at this position.

Outside linebackers (5): Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Kingsley Enagbare, Jonathan Garvin, Tipa Galeai

The Packers could’ve gone in a few different directions here and none would’ve been surprising. Jonathan Garvin and Tipa Galeai make the roster ahead of Kobe Jones and La’Darius Hamilton.

Cornerbacks (5): Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Rasul Douglas, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon

With both Kiondre Thomas and Rico Gafford released, the Packers opted to keep just five cornerbacks. Will they stick with five or add another corner down the line?

Safeties (5): Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, Dallin Leavitt, Tariq Carpenter, Micah Abernathy

No Shawn Davis on the 53-man roster, which was one of the surprises of the day. What a great story for Micah Abernathy, who earned his spot on the roster in the preseason. Will the Packers look to sign a veteran safety?

Specialists (3): Mason Crosby, Pat O’Donnell, Jack Coco

With Mason Crosby activated from the PUP list, he makes the roster. Jack Coco is part of the 53 for now, although the Packers may look for an upgrade at long snapper on waivers.
