The Green Bay Packers currently have five safeties on the roster.

Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are the starters. Behind them on the depth chart are Dallin Leavitt, rookie Tariq Carpenter, and new addition Rudy Ford.

The concern is that all three backups will be used almost exclusively on special teams.

Are the Packers ready if either Amos or Savage suffers an injury? That’s the concern.

Shawn Davis and Vernon Scott had been impressing at training camp but suffered injuries. Davis is on the reserve/injured list, while Scott is no longer on the team.

Green Bay may need to explore free agency to find a reliable third safety to provide some depth on defense.

That’s where Jaquiski Tartt could come in.

Tartt was released by the Philadelphia Eagles this week, but the veteran safety is a talented player and could help the Packers’ defense.

The 30-year-old has started 64 games in the NFL, all for the San Francisco 49ers. Over the past two seasons, Tartt has made 96 tackles, five pass defenses, and an interception.

He is solid in coverage and had his best season in 2019. According to Pro Football Reference, Tartt allowed just 43.5 percent of passes to be completed and a passer rating of 66.8 in his coverage that year.

There aren’t many weaknesses in Joe Barry’s defense, but depth is an issue at a couple of positions, notably safety.

Signing an experienced player like Tartt could make a significant difference. He would provide depth but also has started 64 career games, so can step into a starting role if either Amos or Savage gets injured.

General manager Brian Gutekunst has a great track record of finding talented players either in the summer or in-season. De’Vondre Campbell and Rasul Douglas come to mind. Both signed cheap one-year deals but played so well that they landed new contracts in Green Bay.

With a lack of depth at safety, the Packers should sign Tartt.
