Ahead of their Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers have made an interesting roster move.

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Packers have promoted tackle Caleb Jones to the active roster from the practice squad.

Jones was a surprise cut when the Packers trimmed their roster down to 53 players, but he made it back to the practice squad after clearing waivers.

He had an impressive preseason at tackle and had at one stage looked like a lock to make the 53-man roster.

Why did the Packers promote Caleb Jones?

The question now is why? Why did the Packers decide to promote Jones to the active roster this week?

There are a few different possibilities.

One is that another team had interest in signing Jones from Green Bay’s practice squad. This move would then be required to prevent it from happening.

Another possibility is that Green Bay believes he could play in Week 2.

David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins could be out again this week. Assuming Yosh Nijman covers for Bakhtiari at left tackle, perhaps the Packers want to have Jones start at right tackle instead of Royce Newman, who struggled in Week 1.

It could simply come down to depth. Along with Bakhtiari and Jenkins potentially being out this week, there’s also some uncertainty about whether Jon Runyan Jr. will play. He exited last week’s game due to a concussion.

Promoting Jones to the active roster could just be to provide some additional depth if Bakhtiari, Jenkins, and Runyan are all out on Sunday.

Jones is 6-foot-9, 370 pounds. He was excellent in the preseason. Perhaps he will be starting at right tackle this week against the Bears.

We’ll see. It will be something to watch this week ahead of the game on Sunday Night Football.
