The Green Bay Packers might not be without star cornerback Jaire Alexander for too long.

When Jaire Alexander left Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and didn’t return, many feared the worst for the Green Bay Packers cornerback.

However, there was an encouraging update on Monday.

Alexander may not need to miss much time due to injury.

Packers: Jaire Alexander may have avoided serious injury

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, there is “optimism it’s not a long-term injury” for Alexander, who left Sunday’s game with a groin injury.

Pelissero reported that Alexander will undergo more testing on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

It will be important for the Packers not to rush Alexander back too soon, even if it’s a minor injury. Groin injuries can be tricky as there is the risk of making it worse if a player returns too soon.

Green Bay will need Alexander late in the season, so giving him all the time necessary to return is important.

In the meantime, the Packers’ secondary is in good hands.

Eric Stokes and Rasul Douglas dominated as the Packers’ starting cornerbacks last season while Alexander was out, and they played well against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Douglas made a team-best two pass defenses against the Buccaneers, while Stokes had his best game of the season.

Backup Keisean Nixon stepped in and had a great game. He tackled well, making seven tackles, and also forced a fumble. He even made a spectacular play on special teams, downing a punt at the Buccaneers’ one-yard line.

The Packers will want to get Alexander back out there as soon as possible, but they have enough talent in the secondary to get by in the meantime, ensuring Alexander isn’t rushed back too soon.

If he doesn’t play next week, Nixon will likely start.
