Packers: Two rookies find the end zone in win over Pats
By Jerry Tapp
One was a second-round pick (the 34th overall selection); the other, a fourth-round selection with the 132nd overall pick. Both wide receivers chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers to hopefully shore up a receiving corps that needed a quick infusion.
In the Pack’s Week 4 win over New England, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs gave the Packers a look at what the future (hopefully) will look like with the two of them catching passes (and maybe taking a handoff or two) for the Green and Gold.
Early in the second quarter, Watson took a handoff from Aaron Rodgers and ran 15 yards for his first NFL TD. In the fourth quarter, with Green Bay down by a touchdown, Doubs was on the receiving end of a 13-yard TD pass from Rodgers, his second TD in as many weeks.
Two rookies scoring TDs for the Packers in their 27-24 OT win… two rookies scoring almost half of the team’s points in a win over New England.
Watson and Doubs became the first set of rookies to score a TD in the same game for the Packers since December 3, 2017, when rookie running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams scored TDs in the Pack’s overtime win over Tampa Bay.
Since 2000, there have been seven times when a pair of rookies have scored TDs for the Packers in the same game:
10-2-2022: Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs
12-3-2017: Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams
10-30-2016: Geronimo Allison and Trevor Davis
10-11-2015: Ty Montgomery and Quinten Rollins
11-24-2013: Eddie Lacy and Scott Tolzien
10-27-2013: Micah Hyde and Eddie Lacy
11-10-2002: Najeh Davenport and Marques Anderson
If we turn the calendar back to 1970 (the AFL-NFL expansion season) and look from ’70 to 1999, there were six more times when two Packers rookies scored a TD in the same game.
In fact, in 1971, a pair of Green Bay rookies scored TDs in two different games that season… rookie QB Scott Hunter and first-year running back John Brockington each had a TD in the Packers’ games on September 26 and December 6 that season. It was the last time two rookies had TDs in the same game twice in a season.
For the record, there were also nine games from 1921-59 that the Packers had two (or more) rookies score a TD in the same contest.
One final note: In the 13 times since 1970 that the Packers have had two rookies score a TD in the same game, the team has a 9-3-1 record; they are 5-1-1 in the seven games since 2000.
