Packers: Marcedes Lewis second-oldest player to score TD for Green Bay
By Jerry Tapp
In Sunday’s contest versus the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis in the second quarter scored his first TD of the 2022 season on a two-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers. It was his first TD since 2020 and the 38th of his 17-year career.
What makes the TD so noteworthy is that Lewis, a first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006, at age 38 years,143 days, became the second oldest player to score a touchdown for the Packers.
He is now second on the list behind Zeke Bratkowski, who scored a TD at age 39 years, 355 days, on October 10, 1971, in a game against the Detroit Lions.
There have been 12 Packers players who have scored TDs at the age of 37 or older. Aaron Rodgers tops the list with five. Donald Driver is the only other Packer who has scored multiple TDs at age 37 or older for the team; he had two at age 37.
If we back up the age requirement to 35 years and older, Lewis, who is now in his fifth season with the Pack, has now tallied five TDs for Green Bay since turning 35, which places him third on the team’s all-time list for most TDs by a player 35 years or older.
Here is the list of most TDs by a Packers player age 35 or older:
12-Donald Driver
9-Aaron Rodgers
5-Marcedes Lewis
3-Lynn Dickey
2-Bart Starr
1-Brett Favre, Wesley Walls, and Zeke Bratkowski
Jerry Rice holds the NFL record with 43 TDs scored after turning 35. He is followed by Marcus Allen (25), Tony Gonzalez (23), John Riggins (22) and Charlie Joiner (18). Donald Driver’s 12 TDs after age 35 is tied for 16th most in NFL history.
With his most recent TD, Lewis also became the 24th player in NFL history to score a TD after the age of 38. Jerry Rice again leads this list with 24 TDs after age 38. Ten players scored two or more TDs after the age of 38: Rice (24), Tom Brady (13), Drew Brees (9), Doug Flutie (6), Charlie Joiner (5), Josh McCown (5), Irving Friar (4), Vinny Testaverde (3), Jason Witten (2) and Antonio Gates (2).
Note: Tom Brady and Jerry Rice are tied for the most TDs by a player in their 40s with 10. Other 40-year-olds who have scored an NFL TD: Doug Flutie, Drew Brees, Vinny Testaverde and Warren Moon. Brady, at age 44 years-131 days, holds the NFL record for the oldest player to score a TD in a regular season game. He did it last year on December 12 against the Buffalo Bills.
