Special teams mistakes are back, baby

Ah, remember the brief moments this season when it looked like the Packers had turned a corner on special teams? To their credit, they did come up with a key punt-block on Sunday.

However, there were some major issues that brought back nightmares from last January’s divisional-round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Mason Crosby’s perfect start to the season came to an end, and by no fault of his own. Crosby had a field goal blocked, leaving the Packers scoreless early in the second quarter.

Unfortunately, it got even worse.

Midway through the third quarter, New York blocked a Green Bay punt and returned it for a touchdown, one of the biggest plays of the game. It gave the Jets a 14-point lead, and one they wouldn’t come close to giving up.

The Packers struggled to slow down Jets returner Braxton Berrios, who had a punt return of 19 yards and a kick return of 29 yards.

Outside of a punt block of their own, a 32-yard kick return from Keisean Nixon, and some solid punts from Pat O’Donnell, it was a day to forget for the Packers’ special teams.

Hopefully they can get back on track next week, as Green Bay’s special teams have shown signs of improvement this season.
