3 things the Packers must fix now to save their season
3. Stop the run
When the season started, entering Week 7 with a bottom-six run defense sure wasn’t in the script. But here we are, and the Packers need to fix this immediately.
In the NFL, it doesn’t get much worse than a visiting team arriving to your stadium, making it clear they plan to run the ball, and then doing exactly that while you can do nothing to stop it.
That’s what the New York Jets did in Week 6, rushing 33 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
It’s not just the Jets, either. Every team not named the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has run all over this Packers defense, and they are yet to find any answers.
Outside of Week 3, when the Packers held the Buccaneers to 34 rushing yards, they have given up a combined 777 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground over the other five games. That’s an average of 155.4 yards and 1.4 rushing touchdowns per game.
And, guess what?
Opposing teams are going to keep running the football until the Packers stop them. For the majority of the season, they haven’t been able to.
Until the Packers improve in run defense, forget about the Super Bowl, this team won’t even make it out of the NFC North.
