Packers: Grades for Week 6 performance in loss vs. Jets
It went from bad to worse for the Green Bay Packers in Week 6.
Returning home from their disappointing loss in London, Matt LaFleur’s team needed a response against the New York Jets at Lambeau Field.
Instead, they put together another flat performance, one of the worst of the LaFleur era, in a crushing loss to the Jets.
Packers offense: F
What has happened to the Green Bay Packers’ offense?
Green Bay could get nothing going behind one of the worst offensive line performances you could ever wish to see. Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times and the Jets made nine quarterback hits.
Even when the Jets weren’t dominating, the Packers got in their own way. A botched handoff between Rodgers and AJ Dillon resulted in a turnover, while Rodgers missed a number of throws, looking bothered by his injured thumb.
Put up 10 points at home, and you deserve to get embarrassed. That’s exactly what happened.
Packers defense: D
The defense did a lot right in the first half, limiting the Jets to only three points.
Even after crumbling in the second half, Green Bay’s defense did enough to win the game. Joe Barry’s unit restricted New York to 20 points and 278 total yards, and held them to 1-of-11 on third down.
However, like last week, the Packers had a second-half meltdown. When the team desperately needed a stop, Green Bay allowed a four-play, 74-yard touchdown drive, followed immediately by a five-play, 66-yard touchdown drive.
Then, with time running out, the Jets eased down the field on a 13-play, 58-yard field goal drive that effectively ended the game.
The defense did a lot right in the first half but fell apart as the game went on.
Packers special teams: F
Blocking a punt is great, but that doesn’t excuse the disastrous mistakes this unit made in other parts of the game.
The Packers not only allowed a Mason Crosby field goal to be blocked, but then saw a Pat O’Donnell punt get blocked and returned by the Jets for a touchdown. Embarrassing levels of special teams play we all hoped were left in the 2021 season.
Green Bay also struggled to contain returner Braxton Berrios, who had a 29-yard kick return and a 19-yard punt return.
