Packers: Why a Chase Claypool trade could be difficult

Trading for Chase Claypool would make sense for the Green Bay Packers, but agreeing on a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a challenge.

Could Chase Claypool help the Green Bay Packers‘ offense? Absolutely. Should they try to trade for him before the deadline on November 1? You bet.

However, actually getting a deal over the line could prove to be a challenge.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ asking price could be too high for the Packers. While they need help at wide receiver, they shouldn’t overpay.

According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, the cost in draft picks would be “huge”. Huber reported:

"“According to a league executive who makes trades for his team, the cost could be about on par with the McCaffrey trade, with “multiple” second-round picks, a third and a fifth.”"

Yeah, that’s way too much.

It’s hard to imagine a world where Brian Gutekunst pays multiple premium draft picks for Claypool, regardless of whether he could help Green Bay’s offense.

However, just because the Steelers may want a huge return in a trade, it doesn’t mean they will get that.

Claypool only has one year remaining on his rookie deal beyond this season. If the Steelers can’t work out a long-term deal between now and the end of the 2023 season, they could lose Claypool in free agency.

The Steelers paid Diontae Johnson this past offseason. They drafted George Pickens in the second round. Trading Claypool could make sense for Pittsburgh.

Perhaps the Packers and Steelers can come to an agreement somewhere in the middle. Only time will tell.

However, in no world should the Steelers get anything close to the offer the Carolina Panthers received for Christian McCaffrey.

But if that’s the type of return the Steelers are asking for, a trade may be challenging to pull off before the deadline.
