Packers: Are we set for another significant moment at FedExField?
The Green Bay Packers don’t play at FedExField all that often, but this matchup has provided some significant moments in recent team history.
Sunday’s matchup could provide another.
This Packers team is at a crossroads. A loss on Sunday would be their third in a row. With games against the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles coming shortly, defeat at Washington could derail Green Bay’s season.
However, a win might be just what they need to turn things around and get back on track.
A couple of the Packers’ recent trips to FedExField have provided some significant moments.
2016: Fourth straight loss that prompted ‘run the table’
Midway through the 2016 season felt a little like this one.
The Packers had started the year 4-2 but were anything other than convincing. Sound familiar? It then all came crashing down with the team losing four straight.
That final defeat came at FedExField against Washington. Green Bay allowed six touchdowns — three from the arm of Kirk Cousins and three on the ground with Rob Kelley. A crushing 42-24 loss left the Packers 4-6, and surely the season was over.
However, it proved to be a turning point.
Despite losing four straight, Aaron Rodgers remained confident. Just days later, he boldly claimed the Packers could “run the table”. To steal a phrase from Paul Heyman, Rodgers wasn’t making a prediction, but a spoiler.
Green Bay didn’t lose again until the NFC Championship Game, winning its six remaining regular-season games, then two more in the postseason.
The loss to Washington proved to be the turning point.
2015: Davante Adams shows star potential after difficult season
While a playoff win at Washington in the 2015 season didn’t change the course of the Packers that year, it was an important game for Davante Adams.
In only his second year, Adams had struggled with drops. It had been a season to forget. After finishing the regular season with just 483 yards and a touchdown, few were optimistic that Adams could become the next great Packers wide receiver.
However, his performance at Washington in the wild-card round showed signs of what was to come in the future.
He made four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. Adams showed his ability to win tough catches, and he was on the way to a big performance before suffering an injury. Because of that, he wouldn’t play the rest of the season, but it was an early sign of the player Adams would become.
The following season, Adams had a breakout year with 997 yards and 12 touchdowns.
