Good Stat, Bad Stat: Numbers from the Packers’ loss to Commanders
By Jerry Tapp
A look at the good and bad stats from the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Washington Commanders.
The Green Bay Packers saw their record drop below .500 at 3-4 with a 23-21 loss in an away contest against the Washington Commanders.
Here are a few stats (good and bad) that helped define the contest.
Good Stat: The Packers took a four-point lead into halftime, 14-10. Since 2000, Green Bay had been 56-13 (.812 winning percentage) in away games where they had a four-point lead or more.
Bad Stat: Green Bay had only 12 rushing attempts in the game. The Pack is 1-26 since 1970 in games where they have fewer than 15 rushing attempts in a game. The 12 rushes against Washington were the fewest since November 3, 2019, in a loss to the Chargers.
The team also had only 38 yards rushing; they are 2-23 in the merger era (since 1970) in games when they have fewer than 40 yards rushing in a contest.
Good Stat: Aaron Jones scored a pair of TDs on passes from Aaron Rodgers. Jones has now caught 15 TD passes from Rodgers, good enough for 10th place on the list of players who have caught one (or more) of Rodgers’ 460 regular season TD passes.
Bad Stat: The Packers offense had only 232 total yards against the Commanders. Green Bay has lost 11 of their last 12 games when they have 232 or fewer total yards in a game.
Good Stat: Aaron Jones had nine receptions for 53 yards. The nine catches were a career high. He was targeted 10 times, second-most in his career (he had 11 targets in a game at Arizona). Jones’ top four targeted games have all come on the road.
Bad Stat: This was only the second time in Green Bay history that they failed to convert a third down attempt. They were 0-for-6 against the Commanders. The other time was October 17, 1999, when they were 0-for-8 in third down conversions against the Broncos in Denver.
Good Stat: De’Vondre Campbell had a pick-six in the second quarter. The team had won 19 straight games dating back to November 26, 2009, when they had an interception returned for TD in a game. It was Campbell’s first career TD and the sixth interception of his career.
Bad Stat: Green Bay had only 22:53 time of possession (TOP) compared to Washington’s 37:07 TOP. The 22:53 was the lowest in a game since October 18, 2015, when the Pack had only 22:00 TOP in a game against San Diego. Since 1983, Green Bay is 4-33 in games where they had less than 23 minutes TOP in a game.
Good Stat, Bad Stat: Green Bay is tied for ninth in the league with 55 points scored in the second quarter. They are ranked 14th in first quarter points (27), 22nd in third quarter points (22), and 27th in fourth quarter points (19).
Bad Stat: The Packers had nine accepted penalties, most in a game since December 13, 2020, when they had 12 in a game at Detroit.
Good Stat: The Packers offensive line did not allow a sack in the game. It was the first time the line did not allow a sack in a game since Game #16 last season. The team had won 12 straight when they did not allow a sack until yesterday.
Bad Stat: The team now has a 3-4 record. The last time they were 3-4 was in 2006 when they finished the season 8-8 and did not make the playoffs.
Good Stat: Rookie Samori Toure, a seventh-round choice in last year’s draft, caught his first NFL regular season pass yesterday. He became the 359th Green Bay Packer to catch a pass for the team and the 110th since 2005.
Bad Stat: With a game this Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills, one of the top teams in the league, a four-game losing streak looms large over the team.
The last time they lost four straight in a season was in 2016. They did, however, finish that season with a six-game winning streak and ended the season 10-6. They made the playoffs and made it to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Atlanta Falcons.
Good Stat: Aaron Rodgers attempted 35 passes and did not have an interception in the game. It was the 56th regular season game in his career that he attempted 35 or more passes and did not have an interception.
That puts him in a tie for third most in NFL history with Matt Ryan. Tom Brady tops the list with 90 games, followed by Drew Brees with 66 games. Peyton Manning completes the top five in this category with 47 career games with 35 or more pass attempts and no interceptions.
Bad Stat: The Packers have had a rough month of October. They are 1-3 this month and will face Buffalo on Sunday, October 30. A win on Sunday would prevent only the second time in team history that they lost four times in the month of October. The team went 1-4 in October in 1977.
