No, the Packers shouldn’t trade for A.J. Green before deadline
The Green Bay Packers could add a wide receiver before next week’s trade deadline, but they shouldn’t make a move for A.J. Green.
With a struggling offense, it’s possible the Green Bay Packers will decide to add a wide receiver before the trading window slams shut next Tuesday.
At this stage of the season, it’s unlikely the Packers will be able to find a superstar WR1 on the trade market, but there are talented players potentially available.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, an “interesting name” he has heard for the Packers is Arizona Cardinals wide receiver A.J. Green.
While Green could be an affordable option for the Packers before the deadline, they shouldn’t make a deal for the seven-time Pro Bowler.
The Packers shouldn’t trade for A.J. Green
There is no doubt Green has had an outstanding career. He put up over 1,000 yards receiving in six of his first seven seasons in the league and is in the top 50 for career receiving yards of all-time in the NFL.
However, at age 34, what could Green bring to the Packers’ offense?
The veteran has barely made an impact for the Cardinals this season. Despite playing on 249 offensive snaps, per Pro Football Reference, he has caught just 10 passes for 56 yards and is averaging a career-low 5.6 yards per reception.
He played no part in the Cardinals’ win over the New Orleans Saints last week.
Unable to make a difference in Arizona this year, why would it be any different in Green Bay?
Green would give the offense a veteran presence. He likely wouldn’t make many of the mental errors Aaron Rodgers spoke about on “The Pat McAfee Show”.
However, at this stage of his career, can Green be a difference-maker? He would be taking valuable snaps away from young wide receivers like Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson.
If Green Bay plans to trade for a receiver before the deadline, it should go all-in and try to add a potential difference-maker like D.J. Moore. If not, it should stick with the current roster and aim to improve from within.
A.J. Green won’t fix the Packers’ offensive problems.
