Packers: Aaron Jones – A RB with serious receiving skills
By Jerry Tapp
In the Green Bay Packers‘ loss to the Washington Commanders, running back Aaron Jones scored the only two offensive TDs when he was on the receiving end of a pair of Aaron Rodgers passes.
It was the third time in his career that he caught two or more TD passes in a game: he also did it on October 27, 2019, in a game versus Kansas City, and on September 20, 2021, against the Lions (he caught three TD passes in that contest).
Jones is the only Green Bay running back in history to have two or more TD pass receptions in multiple games. With his two TD receptions in the Washington game, Jones became the 23rd running back in NFL history to have three games with two or more TD receptions.
Billy Cannon, an AFL running back with Houston and Oakland, is noted to have six games with two or more TD receptions. Brian Westbrook, a running back with the Eagles, had five such games in his career.
Seven other running backs (Marshall Faulk, Calvin Hill, Larry Garron, Charley Taylor, Joe Morrison, Lenny Moore, and Howard Cassady) had four career games with two or more TD catches.
Those two TD receptions by Jones in last week’s game also vaulted him into another unique club: He became the 29th player in NFL history to have 40 or more rushing TDs and 15 or more TD pass catches.
Jones, in his sixth season with the Packers, now has 42 rushing TDs to go along with his 15 TD receptions.
Jones’ 15 receiving TDs as a running back puts him one receiving TD from tying Dorsey Levens for the Packers record for most TD receptions by a Green Bay running back. Levens in his Packers career had 16 TD receptions and 28 rushing TDs.
Here is the Top 10 in Packers’ history for most TD receptions by a Green Bay running back:
16-Dorsey Levens
15-Aaron Jones
14-Ahman Green
14-William Henderson
12-Paul Hornung
10-Edgar Bennett
10-Gerry Ellis
10-Jim Taylor
8-John Kuhn
8-Jamaal Williams
Marshall Faulk holds the NFL record for most TD receptions by a running back with 36. He is followed by Darren Sproles (32), James Brooks (30) and Brian Westbrook (30).
