Should the Packers bench Aaron Rodgers for Jordan Love?
It won’t be happening anytime soon, but should the Green Bay Packers bench Aaron Rodgers in favor of backup quarterback Jordan Love?
It has become a key topic among Packers fans this week after the team fell to a fifth-straight defeat against the Detroit Lions, a game in which Rodgers threw three interceptions.
But is moving to Love the answer? What are the potential benefits of making a switch?
The Packers won’t, but should they bench Aaron Rodgers?
As long as the Packers remain in playoff contention, there’s next to zero chance they bench Rodgers. They may still not move to Love even if they are eliminated.
But, should they?
While they are still in playoff contention, Green Bay shouldn’t give up. Unless Matt LaFleur believes Love gives the team a better chance to win, this should remain Rodgers’ job.
Because if Rodgers gets hot, helps turn things around and leads the Packers to a wild-card berth, anything can happen. Wishful thinking? Perhaps, but they shouldn’t give up while there’s still a chance, no matter how small.
However, the moment Green Bay is eliminated from playoff contention, the situation changes.
At that stage, there would be little benefit from not making the switch.
Jordan Love has one career start. Next spring, the Packers must decide whether to pick up his fifth-year option. Giving him a run of starts would help the team evaluate him.
Yes, they see him at practice every day, but there’s a difference between practice reps and taking on NFL defenses in the regular season.
Love failed in his first test last year on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he wasn’t helped by the offensive line. He also was named the starter on short notice.
De’Vondre Campbell said Love is “better than a lot of starting quarterbacks” on Clubhouse Live this week. That’s high praise from the All-Pro linebacker.
But Love needs a chance to prove himself on the regular-season stage.
If, and likely when, the Packers are eliminated from contention, the team needs to take a view to the future. Give Love a run of starts. Valuable reps for Love, but also an opportunity for the team to evaluate him for the future.
