The bitter truth of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers this offseason
Significant changes could be on the way for the Green Bay Packers.
More specifically, at QB1.
Aaron Rodgers’ future is again under the spotlight, with retirement, a trade, or returning to Green Bay all possibilities.
Well, it seems the end of the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay could be closer than ever.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Packers’ preference would be to move on from the four-time MVP this offseason.
"“League sources believe the franchise prefers to move on from Rodgers, just as it once did with Brett Favre. Those sources also believe that Rodgers is well aware of the Packers’ feelings on the situation,” Schefter reported."
That’s significant.
In previous years, the Packers have made it clear that they wanted Rodgers back. As long as he wanted to keep playing, the Packers wanted him back.
But according to Schefter, they would rather move on this offseason.
If that is indeed the case, it effectively takes away the “run it back” option for Green Bay. If Rodgers wants to keep playing, it would open the door for a trade.
As Schefter added in the article, the Packers could expect “substantial interest” around the league if Rodgers was available in a trade.
But Rodgers would need to find the best landing spot for him. Is there a team only a quarterback away from winning a Super Bowl?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 7-9 in 2019, but they clearly had a talented roster and an excellent coach. They signed Tom Brady and immediately won a Super Bowl.
The New York Jets could be that team in 2023. They went 7-10 this season but had the No. 4 defense and a talented offense. The Jets need an upgrade at quarterback to compete.
But there are multiple factors to consider.
The Packers would need to find a trade partner for Aaron Rodgers, while Rodgers would have to want to play for that team.
And, right now, we don’t even know if Rodgers wants to play football in 2023 at all.
But with Adam Schefter reporting that Green Bay “prefers to move on from Rodgers”, the Jordan Love era could be closer than ever.
