5 Packers players who likely played their final game for the team
2. Robert Tonyan
Another tight end with an uncertain future is Robert Tonyan.
Tonyan earned the nickname “Baby Kittle” during his 11-touchdown 2020 season. He was a go-to target for Aaron Rodgers that year, dominating in the red zone. His breakout season didn’t come out of nowhere, either, as Tonyan had shown potential in previous years but had been unlucky with injuries.
However, the former undrafted free agent has been unable to replicate his 2020 dominance in the two seasons since.
Tonyan only caught two touchdowns in eight games in 2021. He suffered a season-ending injury in the Week 8 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, more awful injury luck.
The hope was that Tonyan would enjoy a bounce-back 2022 season. He finished with 53 catches, a new career-high, putting up 470 yards but just two touchdowns.
Tonyan made plays along the way but struggled for consistency. Part of that could be because he was returning from a significant injury. Perhaps he will get back to his 2020-best next season.
But it’s unclear whether he will get that opportunity in Green Bay.
With a strong tight end class in the 2023 NFL Draft to choose from, the Packers may decide to find their next long-term starter in the early rounds rather than re-signing Tonyan or Lewis.
