Green Bay Packers tight end Robert Tonyan remained a key player in Matt LaFleur’s offense this season.

How did he perform coming off a significant injury? What’s next for the Packers’ starting tight end?

Set to hit free agency in the spring, has Tonyan played his snap in Green Bay?

2022 season review

Tonyan set a new career-high in both receptions and targets, but he was unable to make a consistent impact like he did in 2020.

He finished the season with 470 receiving yards and only two touchdowns, along with a career-low 8.9 yards per reception.

Compare that to his breakout season in 2020, when Tonyan caught 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 11.3 yards per catch.

What Tonyan lacked this season were big plays. While he could be relied on to make catches, we didn’t see enough game-changing moments from him.

Following the regular season, Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network ranked the top 25 tight ends in the NFL in 2022. Tonyan made the list, but he ranked 24th.

What’s next?

Tonyan and teammate Marcedes Lewis are free agents this offseason. With the Packers’ limited salary cap space, do they plan to re-sign either tight end? Time will tell.

While Tonyan has shown he can be a reliable target in the passing game, the 2020 season remains the only year he was a game-changing receiver for Green Bay.

Now, he was coming off a significant injury this season, so it’s possible he will get closer to his 2020 form next year.

But the Packers also have to seriously consider their options at tight end. It has been far too long since they had a tight end who can dominate games. The tight end draft class is also a good one.

It will be interesting to see whether the Packers bring back either Robert Tonyan or Marcedes Lewis this offseason.
