With free agency a little over a month away, what are the Green Bay Packers‘ top five areas of need?

Between now and then, they may re-sign some players. If they have enough cap space, they could sign some free agents, although they will likely be limited in what they can do.

As things stand today based on who is under contract in 2023, what are the Packers’ biggest needs?

Packers: Top five needs entering free agency

5. Defensive line

Under contract in 2023: Kenny Clark, T.J. Slaton, Devonte Wyatt, Jonathan Ford, Chris Slayton

It’s the same old story. The Packers need to improve up front on defense.

Kenny Clark has some help with first-round pick Devonte Wyatt, but the Packers need to keep adding talent. Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed are free agents.

4. Wide receiver

Under contract in 2023: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Samori Toure, Bo Melton, Jeff Cotton

The Packers could lose a lot of experience with Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard hitting free agency. Currently, they lack depth behind Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.

Unless either Cobb or Lazard is back, signing a veteran to an affordable one-year deal and drafting a wide receiver should be on the to-do list.

3. Edge rusher

Under contract in 2023: Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Kingsley Enagbare, Jonathan Garvin, La’Darius Hamilton

It’s mostly the same group from this season, although Rashan Gary could miss some time at the start of 2023 as he recovers from injury.

Green Bay managed just 34 sacks this season. Finding another difference-maker at edge rusher would help this defense tremendously.

2. Safety

Under contract in 2023: Darnell Savage, Tariq Carpenter, Innis Gaines, James Wiggins

Adrian Amos, Rudy Ford, and Dallin Leavitt are free agents. Green Bay may re-sign one or two. In the meantime, the Packers need to find a starting safety for the 2023 season. They also lack depth.

1. Tight end

Under contract in 2023: Josiah Deguara, Austin Allen, Nick Guggemos

Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan are free agents, leaving the Packers with little depth at tight end. They should look to find a long-term starter in the draft, and there could be plenty of options in the early rounds, with the likes of Dalton Kincaid, Michael Mayer, and Luke Musgrave.
