Packers: Reasons for and against bringing back Aaron Rodgers in 2023
Will he get a trade? Will he retire? Will he return to the Green Bay Packers?
Aaron Rodgers’ future remains a mystery. He needs time to decide his future, and the Packers also need to decide whether they want to move forward with Rodgers or begin the Jordan Love era.
Let’s look at the reasons for and against the Packers bringing back Rodgers in 2023.
Why the Packers should bring back Aaron Rodgers in 2023
How different could the season have gone if Aaron Rodgers didn’t injure his thumb? We’ll never know.
What we do know is that in the final five games, the Packers went 4-1. Rodgers was healthier, and he had built a connection with young wide receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.
They will only keep getting better in year two, and the Packers can focus on adding more talent to the roster in the coming months.
Add another wide receiver, tight end, and draft some defensive players, and the team could get back to the playoffs in 2023.
And if they can get back to the postseason, why couldn’t they put together another magical Super Bowl run?
Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks don’t come around every day. Rodgers can still play at a high level, so it would make sense to give him another year, should he wish.
Why the Packers shouldn’t bring back Aaron Rodgers in 2023
Jordan. Love.
If not now, then when? Love is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Yes, the Packers can pick up his fifth-year option, but now is the time to give Love an opportunity.
After impressing in limited game time against the Philadelphia Eagles, Love has shown enough to deserve his opportunity as the Packers’ QB1.
Green Bay is also limited in cap space. The team spent the past two years restructuring deals, pushing money into future years, and trying to keep Rodgers’ championship window open. And it didn’t work. The team got significantly worse in 2022, going 8-9 and missing out on the playoffs.
Why are things going to suddenly change in 2023? How can this team, with their limited cap space, go from playoff-less to Super Bowl contenders?
Instead, they should end a great era with Rodgers and start a new one with Love.
