The Green Bay Packers pulled off one of the draft’s biggest surprises of recent years when they traded up for Jordan Love in the first round three years ago.

Could the Packers draft another quarterback this year?

Well, it depends.

If they do add a quarterback, it would be a huge surprise if it was in the first round. An even bigger surprise than when they drafted Love.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t pick a QB relatively early.

History seems to have a way of repeating itself in Green Bay.

Just as the Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers while they still had Brett Favre, they drafted Jordan Love while Rodgers was still on top of his game.

Rodgers sat for three years behind Favre. So far, Love has backed up Rodgers for the same amount of time.

The Packers traded Favre to the New York Jets. The Jets are a potential candidate for a Rodgers trade this spring.

Rodgers replaced Favre as Green Bay’s starting quarterback in 2008. That year, the Packers selected two quarterbacks, including Brian Brohm in the second round.

If Rodgers isn’t back in Green Bay next season and Love replaces him, drafting a quarterback becomes quite likely. That most likely means adding a backup on Day 3. However, as history shows, the team was willing to use a second-round choice at quarterback in Rodgers’ first season as a starter.

They also drafted Matt Flynn in the seventh round.

In a scenario where the Packers keep Rodgers but trade Love, drafting a quarterback on Day 3 would make sense. Green Bay would need a backup and a young quarterback to develop.

The only scenario that wouldn’t make sense to draft a quarterback is if both Rodgers and Love return to Green Bay in 2023.

But if either is gone, don’t be surprised if the Packers draft a quarterback.
