The Green Bay Packers have released their initial 53-man roster, but this is just the beginning.
Making the roster on cutdown day isn't an automatic ticket to the regular season. Many recently waived players will find new homes on Monday, which means more roster cuts.
The Packers have some imbalance at various positions. They're deep in some areas, keeping six wide receivers, 10 offensive linemen, and seven defensive tackles. But they're pretty thin in other positions, with only four edge rushers and five cornerbacks making the 53. Don't be surprised if general manager Brian Gutekunst makes several moves in the coming days.
But for every incoming player, someone must depart. Even after making the Packers' initial 53 on Sunday, these four players' roster spots are still in jeopardy.
Four Packers on the 53-man roster who are still not guaranteed a spot
Travis Glover
The Packers kept 10 offensive linemen, and Travis Glover was the biggest surprise of them all.
Glover missed all of last season due to injury and hasn't played since Green Bay's playoff exit to Philadelphia in January 2025. He didn't stand out at training camp and is likely at the bottom of the depth chart.
While Glover can play tackle and guard, there are simply too many players ahead of him. Jordan Morgan, Zach Bako-Bewele, Anthony Belton, and John Williams can play tackle. Aaron Banks, Jacob Monk, Belton, Jager Burton, and Donovan Jennings are likely preferred at guard.
Glover might be the first to go if (and when) Green Bay adds players at other positions.
Josh Whyle
Josh Whyle must've had a nervous few hours while the Packers trimmed their roster. A week ago, he was the clear TE2 behind Tucker Kraft with no competition in sight.
Then, the Packers signed Jonnu Smith and traded for Mark Redman. Whyle has potentially fallen to TE4, which leaves his roster in jeopardy.
Kraft is a star. Smith is an excellent pass-catcher but won't offer much as a blocker. Redman will become the primary blocking tight end but won't catch many passes. Where does that leave Whyle? The Packers have every base covered at tight end, and it could put Whyle's roster spot at risk if the team needs to create room.
Anthony Campbell or Jonathan Ford
The Packers kept seven defensive tackles on the 53-man roster but only four edge rushers. Something has to give, right?
Devonte Wyatt, Javon Hargave, and Chris McClellan. Starters. Karl Brooks and Warren Brinson. Likely roster locks.
That leaves Anthony Campbell and Jonathan Ford, who both have a strong case for a roster spot. That's why they made the initial 53.
Campbell has been a standout all summer long and is one of the Packers' best stories. He has used his length to swat away passes. He's strong against the run and flashed some real interior pass-rush potential in the preseason. Ford is a potential starting nose tackle and earned the Packers' highest PFF defensive grade in the warm-up contests.
Can the Packers really roster seven interior linemen but only four edge rushers? Maybe they will trim other positions to bring in another pass rusher, but the Packers may not be able to justify keeping both Campbell and Ford.
