Bizarre Aaron Rodgers rumor would set up revenge game with Packers

Well, this would be surprising.

Another offseason, another what's-next-for-Aaron Rodgers storyline.

With free agency fast approaching, the quarterback jigsaw pieces will soon fall into place. Will Matthew Stafford land a trade from the Los Angeles Rams? Where will Sam Darnold sign? The answers to these questions could also shape Rodgers' future.

Stafford departing Los Angeles could open the door for Rodgers to take the reins of Sean McVay's offense. The Rodgers-to-Rams buzz won't go away.

A four-time MVP with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers said if he continues to play, he wants to join a contender. It makes the latest rumors from the NFL Scouting Combine particularly surprising.

While Rodgers' story with the New York Jets is reaching its conclusion, his time in New York might have only reached halftime. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the New York Giants could become a possible landing spot.

"There was talk at the Combine on Tuesday that Rodgers has reached out to the Giants," writes Florio. "Usually, we don't traffic in things we've heard. Because we hear plenty of things that might or might not be true. The way I heard this specific thing, however, leads me to believe it's more likely than not true."

It would be a surprising destination. Do the Giants really fit Rodgers' "good team" criteria? Is 3-14 good? Perhaps the arrival of Rodgers and the No. 3 pick in April's draft would help the Giants spring back into playoff contention, but that feels like wishful thinking.

Rodgers remaining in New York might not make a whole lot of sense, but it would impact the Packers in 2025.

Giants signing Aaron Rodgers would set up marquee showdown vs. Jordan Love and Packers

Time is running out for Rodgers to get a revenge game against the Packers (or the other way around, depending on how you look at it), but a surprising move to the Giants would remedy that.

Green Bay will play against the entire NFC East in 2025, setting up a road game against the Giants. It won't quite carry the storyline of a Rodgers return to Lambeau Field, but a matchup between the Packers and arguably their greatest-ever quarterback would be quite something.

It would be especially bizarre with Rodgers playing on the other side of the Packers-Giants rivalry. Perhaps calling it a "rivalry" is an exaggeration, but the two teams have played in some memorable games. In 2011, New York one-and-doned Green Bay in its 15-1 season. Rodgers won his first NFL MVP award that year.

The Giants also handed the Packers a loss in their first international contest three years ago, the same game where Rodgers broke his thumb to begin a rare five-game losing stretch.

Rodgers remaining in New York feels like a long shot. Would he view the Giants as a "good team?" Would they even want to sign him?

But it has been said enough at the NFL Combine to catch Florio's attention, and it's something to watch as the quarterback dominoes begin to fall in the weeks ahead.
