It's no surprise that the Green Bay Packers have an issue at cornerback. However, as the team looks for one of its many players to stand up and take the reins as its de facto leader, one surprising candidate may have done just that: second-round rookie Brandon Cisse.
Since the start of training camp, head coach Matt LaFleur has made it clear that the state of the team's cornerback room is not really set in stone. As drama swirls around starting cornerback Keisean Nixon, Cisse has quietly gone about his business, and it may result in him cementing himself as one of the starters in the secondary.
Selected 52nd overall in the 2026 NFL Draft out of South Carolina, Cisse stepped into a Packers roster that seemed relatively set. Many assumed the Packers would, as they often do, let Cisse ease into life in the NFL and not rely on him too much, and that may have been the plan. However, to his credit, he's made it very hard to let that happen.
Ever since training camp began for the Packers, Cisse has done nothing but perform, and that includes on the field against other teams. In his brief appearance in the preseason against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, Cisse put on an impressive display.
Brandon Cisse is making the case to be a Day 1 starter for the Packers
Cisse made some stellar plays, including a huge open-field tackle early in the game that saved a touchdown. While we'll likely see more of him in the coming preseason weeks, the rookie has also taken charge of the cornerback room on the practice field.
According to Andy Herman of the Pack-A-Day Podcast, Cisse has basically been a full-time starter at cornerback during training camp, even when guys get rotated out.
So much rotation at CB today. Except for Brandon Cisse. He’s basically been the full time starter since Day 4 of practice and I don’t see him giving it up any time soon.

Zaire has been all over the…
This could just be the Packers looking to give him as many reps as possible, but it very much looks like the young rookie is projected to be one of the main players on the field in the Packers' secondary.
Of course, this comes with its own range of concerns despite his play. Even though Cisse has been stellar in practice reps and preseason, he hasn't lined up against legitimate opposing wide receivers in a real game just yet.
As many players will tell you, there is a big difference between the practice reps and having to really line up when the season begins. Despite this, the Packers might have no choice but to lean on Cisse earlier than anticipated.
With Nixon seemingly struggling at camp and clearly having some sort of issue with the team, and other cornerbacks like Carrington Valentine and Benjamin St-Juste having not established themselves as fully reliable just yet, Cisse may get the chance to showcase that his training camp isn't a fluke, but the start of a great career.
