Green Bay Packers fans have gotten pretty annoyed hearing all about how much better the Chicago Bears are going to be moving forward. Sure, they have Ben Johnson leading them at the head coaching spot but he's unproven in that role. Sure, Caleb Williams now has an offensive-minded head coach to help him grow but when have the Bears ever had a scary quarterback?
Well, to make matters even more comical than they already are, when Williams took a late hit from Bills pass-rusher Joey Bosa during Friday's practice, not a single member of the Bears squad came to their quarterback's rescue/defense. As Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated said when reporting the incident, "Something to file away." Yes, indeed.
"On one play about 90 minutes into practice, Bosa pushed Williams in the upper chest as he finished his pass rush. In most sessions, forcible contact with a starting quarterback would have resulted in either a loud shoving match or a full-scale brawl," Verderame wrote. "In Lake Forest, it resulted in a collective shrug from teammates as the Bears moved to their next play in the two-minute drill."
Bears players not defending Caleb Williams is music to Packers fans' ears
It's pretty common in the NFL when a quarterback takes a late hit or cheap shot that his fellow offensive linemen or skills players come to his defense and get into it with the player who put the hit on. The fact that the Bears didn't come to Williams' rescue after he took a late hit might show there's some drama on the team that we don't know about (at least not yet).
The NFC North is once again expected to be one of the toughest divisions in the league. The Lions have unfortunately won the division the past two years but after losing both of their coordinators, it feels pretty wide open again. The Vikings practically have a rookie quarterback (even if he's technically not considered one) and the Bears, despite all of their hype, are still the Bears.
If we're already seeing issues with the Bears' offense in training camp, the hope is that the drama carries into the season. Maybe Williams' teammates didn't see the cheap shot or just didn't want to cause a big scene in practice but this is certainly a situation that Packers fans are licking their chops at. The more drama in the Windy City, the better it is for the Packers.
