With the Green Bay Packers entering training camp having the need to potentially add more pass rush depth, you can all but guarantee it's not going to come from one specific veteran still without a job.
Preston Smith, a former Packer fan favorite who ended up being dealt, still has yet to sign with a club with camp right around the corner, and from the looks of it, he might not ever get one.
Last season, the Packers saw Smith struggle mightily. Naturally, Smith blamed the new scheme for his poor play and production. But, the Packers didn't buy it. Instead, they shipped him off to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for just a seventh-round pick.
Now? Smith's career is looking like it might be over.
Preston Smith isn't even the best free agent pass rusher on the market
For Packer fans wanting the team to add more help at the position, Green Bay could end up going after someone like former first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, who also remains unsigned. Clowney, though, feels much more like a guy who will get scooped up and help a contending team rather than Smith.
You could even argue someone like Matt Judon would be a strong addition. Just last year, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a third rounder. That says something about his perceived value just one year younger than he is now.
But, looking at Smith, there is a reason why the Steelers made him a healthy scratch for their playoff game last season. His production went down, and so did the effort at times. All in all, Smith only tallied 4.5 sacks all of last year. Two of them came in the same game against the Tennessee Titans.
In total, he went without a sack in 13 games between his time in Green Bay and Pittsburgh. Now, sacks of course aren't everything. But, anybody watching him would tell you that he's taken a significant step back.
At 32 years old, Smith might be done. The Steelers cut him to save some money, chose not to bring him back on a friendly deal and, honestly, it very well could be time to call it a career, barring one more last-ditch effort from a desperate team.
