Entering the season, Jordan Love seemed poised to upgrade his game. A Week 1 injury last year hindered his mobility, resulting in just 83 rushing yards in 2024. After a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, however, Love has already surpassed that number, recording 88 yards in the first six weeks of the 2025 season.
"It's definitely been a big emphasis for me," Love said during his post-game press conference. "I had that focus coming into the season. There were some opportunities [last year] where I could've extended the plays and made some plays with my legs."
Remaining healthy is obviously still key for Green Bay's franchise quarterback, but taking advantage of rushing opportunities can increase the chance for successful plays. In Sunday's matchup against the Bengals, Love recorded seven rushes for 26 yards, second to Josh Jacobs. A key play was a scramble on 3rd-and-1, extending the drive and setting up a touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft.
"Quarterbacks using their legs and trying to extend plays is huge," Love explained. "It puts that extra layer of pressure on the defense."
Jordan Love is finally unlocking the missing piece to his game
With his mobility becoming more of a factor, Love's playmaking ability becomes even more dangerous.
He's never shied away from attempting off-platform throws, and if scrambling out of the pocket can buy an extra second for a downfield heave or create enough distance for a turn upfield, defenses will have to seriously reconsider how they approach matchups with Green Bay.
There's still room to grow in the newfound run game, however. Just before the two-minute warning, Love slid ahead of the first-down marker, leaving the team with an awkward 3rd-and-2, which resulted in a timeout being called immediately following the stoppage. Between games, the Packers will need to work on optimizing their quarterback's rushing attempts.
Fans don't expect Love to show off mobility that rivals Lamar Jackson or Jayden Daniels, but his rushing efforts so far are a sign that he feels more comfortable following repeated injuries in 2024.
The new emphasis on finding rushing opportunities will stretch defenses thin, creating more potential for explosive plays through the air.
