While many of the Green Bay Packers' starters sat out during the preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, one position battle raged on as Jordan Morgan continues to fight for the starting left tackle position. He hopes to take over Rasheed Walker's spot on the depth chart, and the Packers' coaching staff hasn't shut the door on him just yet.
"I've liked it. He's done a really good job", offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said regarding Morgan's recent performance. "He played against a really good D-end and did a good job."
In Indianapolis, Morgan stood his ground against Laiatu Latu, who was taken 15th overall by the Colts in last year's draft. Latu registered four sacks and 32 tackles in 2024, finishing 12th in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
Jordan Morgan is closing the gap on Rasheed Walker for the Packers' left tackle job
Morgan didn't allow a single pressure during his time on the field and did so without committing a penalty, something that became an issue for rookie tackle Anthony Belton, who had five penalties.
Morgan, the first-round pick for the Packers in 2024, played in a limited capacity last season due to a shoulder injury. He saw the field in just six games but will have the opportunity to be much more active this season, even if he doesn't win the position battle for left tackle.
A lack of depth along the offensive line could force the versatile 24-year-old to take the field if injuries arise among the starting five.
Being able to showcase his talent during the preseason is an advantage that Morgan has over Walker, who has held the starting position for the last two seasons. Walker has avoided seeing the field throughout the preseason so far thanks to a groin injury, which subsequently allowed Morgan to get more attention.
It's still "100 percent a competition," according to head coach Matt LaFleur, who added that he's seen a lot of good stuff on tape.
Walker is entering a contract year after being drafted in 2022. The result of this battle could lend some insight into what the Packers imagine the future of their offensive line looks like. While Walker has been a great player, Morgan could be rising at just the right time.
With just three weeks until the kickoff of Week 1, every moment matters.
