Luke Musgrave is undoubtedly entering a make-or-break year, but what if the Green Bay Packers moved on before the season even begins?
That's how Bill Huber of Packers On SI sees it playing out, and, honestly, it raises a fascinating scenario, and one the Packers should seriously explore if it is available.
Huber made his latest 53-man roster predictions, and interestingly, he has the Packers trading Musgrave.
"Musgrave had every opportunity to earn a big role in 2024, when (Tucker) Kraft was sidelined for the offseason practices by a torn pectoral, during the second half of 2025, when Kraft suffered the knee injury, and this offseason, when Kraft was out," writes Huber. "He failed to take advantage. Maybe a tight end-hungry team will take a shot in a trade in exchange for a 2027 draft pick or to address a position of need. That, of course, is all dependent on Kraft."
It's important to clarify that Huber is making a prediction, not reporting that Musgrave is on the trade block, but it's worth a closer look nonetheless.
If the Packers realistically could trade Musgrave, they absolutely should.
For another team, trading away a Day 3 pick and banking on Musgrave's potential is a worthwhile roll of the dice. From Green Bay's perspective, it makes sense to cash in. Musgrave only has a year left on his rookie contract, so the window to make a trade will soon close.
Packers should try to trade Luke Musgrave for a draft pick if they get an opportunity
While Huber is making a prediction and not reporting that it will happen, it's not far-fetched in the slightest. It reportedly almost happened before last year's trade deadline.
In November, Justis Mosqueda of Acme Packing Company reported that the Packers came close to trading Musgrave to the Jacksonville Jaguars or Denver Broncos for a fifth-round pick. He noted that it "looked like it was going to happen," but the Packers then lost Tucker Kraft to a torn ACL and Ben Sims on waivers to the Minnesota Vikings. That ended the conversation.
While trading Musgrave would hurt the Packers' tight end depth, they should absolutely make that deal if something similar becomes available again.
Musgrave just isn't going to become a featured piece of Matt LaFleur's offense. No matter how hard the Packers try, it ain't happening. He's had countless opportunities, including last year after the Packers lost Kraft to injury. Musgrave failed to deliver.
In the first eight games last season, Musgrave caught just nine passes for 88 yards. Following Kraft's injury, Musgrave managed just 15 catches for 164 yards in nine games. Talk about a missed opportunity.
Before long, Musgrave's increased opportunities disappeared, and he was outsnapped by John FitzPatrick and Josh Whyle.
Whyle could be Musgrave's replacement as the TE2. Although depth charts will have Musgrave as the primary backup at tight end, the end of last season told us a different story, and there's no reason why Whyle can't continue to outsnap the 2023 second-round pick.
Make a deal, add even more draft capital to their projected 11 picks in the 2027 NFL Draft, and get something now instead of watching Musgrave walk for nothing in free agency next year.
Huber made a prediction, not a spoiler of what's to come. But the Packers should make it happen. Trading Musgrave would be a smart move, and one they should make while they still can.
