Matt LaFleur finally lost patience.
He had already warned his team to tone it down on the practice field, but it seems the message hadn't quite gotten through to the players.
It started with free-agent signing Nate Hobbs on Monday, who LaFleur briefly pulled from practice due to an unnecessary hit on running back MarShawn Lloyd. Things escalated to an unacceptable level on Tuesday's practice, largely due to an incident between left tackle Rasheed Walker and edge-rusher Kingsley Enagbare.
"Matt LaFleur is furious at Rasheed Walker," Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported from practice. "Ordered him to take a lap and threw an expletive in there. Walker did something to Enagbare and got booted. Didn't see what exactly."
Schneidman later clarified that Walker "held on and pulled him to the ground and both hit the deck."
"Can't recall ever seeing LaFleur get that upset at a player in camp," noted Aaron Nagler of Cheesehead TV.
LaFleur reportedly pulled the starters after the incident, and his anger continued after practice.
"LaFleur is absolutely laying into the team after practice. Can only hear bits and pieces from where we're standing, but he's not happy," Schneidman writes.
Well, then.
Latest Packers training camp incident can actually be a positive entering the season
It's not ideal to have incidents like this at camp, especially if players are placed at greater risk of injury. However, while the Packers need to rein it in somewhat, it's great to see the team playing with such fire.
That's what they need to carry over into the regular season, especially in the NFC North, where training camp fights and angry head coaches are becoming the norm.
LaFleur is fired up. Ben Johnson has repeatedly gone off on his new-look Bears offense, while Dan Campbell had to cancel multiple Lions practices due to fights breaking out.
The Vikings? Well, they are just blissfully unaware of the struggles coming their way as a quarterback with zero NFL snaps prepares to start in a Super Bowl-or-bust season.
LaFleur understandably wants to shut down any extra-curricular chippiness between his players. He has to limit it before things get out of control.
But from a fan's perspective, this is great. We love to see the fire from the players. Get the popcorn ready, because if training camp across the division is any indication, the NFC North competition is going to get interesting.
