Will the Green Bay Packers trade Romeo Doubs? It's the million-dollar question fans have wondered for an entire offseason. We finally have an answer, and an emphatic one.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur appeared on the Up & Adams show following Thursday's joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks, and he left no doubt about Doubs' future.
"I'd be very shocked if he ever was going anywhere. No, that will not happen," LaFleur told Adams about a potential Doubs trade. "Rome is out there competing and doing everything that we need to see from him. Obviously, he's played a lot of ball for us and at a high level. He's been a great teammate and he goes out there and you can count on him every day."
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur emphatically ends discussion about a Romeo Doubs trade
It wasn't just what LaFleur said, but how he said it. He left no doubt about it.
The thinking behind a Doubs trade is logical. Green Bay has added depth to a crowded wide receiver room with first-round pick Matthew Golden and third-round choice Savion Williams. They already have Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and (eventually) Christian Watson, not to mention their two tight ends and strong rushing attack.
Doubs, who reportedly had frustrations with his role last season and received a one-game suspension from the Packers, could see an even more unpredictable target share. He's also entering the final year of his contract.
But it would appear the Packers have no interest in moving him. It's up to LaFleur to figure out how all the jigsaw pieces fit into his offense, but Doubs can still undoubtedly play a major role.
Jordan Love and Malik Willis have targeted him 168 times over the past two seasons, so the opportunities will remain, even if his involvement fluctuates week to week.
Injuries may also play a part in the Packers' decision. Their playoff hopes fell apart once Doubs and Reed joined Watson on the sidelines in their season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and they will want to avoid a repeat.
The Packers have dealt with injuries at the position again this summer.
Doubs returned to practice this week, but Reed and Wicks remain out, Williams has been in and out of practice, and Watson will likely begin the season on the PUP list.
While trading Doubs would make some sense, even if it gives the Packers one fewer reliable option, the conversation is effectively over.
LaFleur made it crystal clear that the former fourth-rounder isn't going anywhere.
