In a shocking development, the Dallas Cowboys released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs ahead of their regular-season finale. However, he managed to land on his feet roughly 24 hours later, with the Green Bay Packers reportedly claiming him off waivers.
Diggs is officially a member of the Packers, though the transaction merely feels like a formality. Signs have pointed toward him joining Green Bay since he was abruptly cut by the Cowboys, with Micah Parsons being the common denominator.
After four seasons in Dallas together, Parsons and Diggs have developed a well-chronicled friendship. Their connection ostensibly factored into the Packers' decision-making process, and the former seems very eager to be eager with his former Cowboys teammate.
Packers star Micah Parsons wastes no time welcoming Trevon Diggs to Green Bay
Parsons took to social media almost immediately following word of the Diggs news. It was a short post, but the message was crystal clear:
"We're back." Parsons wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), accompanied by a saluting face emoji.
All Parsons needed was two words and a small image to let us know know his excitement about Diggs' addition to Green Bay's secondary. They thrived alongside each other in Dallas before injuries derailed the latter's career, each earning All-Pro First Team honors in 2021. With that in mind, it's easy to see why this was the reaction.
While Parsons is ostensibly thrilled, he doesn't sound surprised. That's probably because his agent, who suddenly (and notably) became Diggs' representation upon being released by the Cowboys, was signaling the move. Nevertheless, here we are, with the Packers taking a flier on a once game-changing player.
It remains to be seen if Diggs, 27, can be a legitimate difference-maker. He's dealt with significant knee/lower-body injuries in recent years and has yet to return to his ball-hawking ways. But few, if any, are more qualified to speak on him than Parsons.
Bias aside, Parsons had a front-row seat to his ex-Cowboys comrade's ascension. He witnessed the work ethic and the setbacks, taking the good with the bad. His confidence in Diggs evidently hasn't wavered despite some unfortunate health issues.
While Diggs is removed from his record-setting 11-interception campaign, perhaps he can help fill one of the Packers' most glaring roster hole. They've struggled on the back end, especially since Parsons went down with a torn ACL; his elite pass-rushing abilities masked a lot of problems.
