Micah Parsons trade may push Packers toward bold last-minute FA targets

One simple question: why not?

There is no telling when fans are going to come down from this ridiculous high after watching the Green Bay Packers pull off the ultimate last-minute blockbuster trade and acquiring pass rusher Micah Parsons. Truthfully, they probably won't, and justifiably so.

To create even more excitement, though, the Packers could still go out and make a couple of other free agent acquisitions to even further complete their defense around Parsons. The Packers' defense already looks scary, but it could get even more daunting in a hurry.

What about Green Bay going out and taking a calculated risk like signing Christian Wilkins?

Christian Wilkins is among a couple of bold Packers' free agent targets following the Micah Parsons trade

In late July, the Las Vegas Raiders decided to release Christian Wilkins for multiple reasons. The former Miami Dolphins standout defensive tackle spent just one year with Vegas before the Raiders released him due to a conflict that came from his jones fracture.

There was also a secondary (and rather absurd) incident that led to his release, but it should be noted there was no foul play here.

Nonetheless, Wilkins is still one of the top interior defensive linemen in the NFL and, at 29 years old, is in the thick of his prime and has a year or two left of elite play. How terrifying would that Packers defense be with Wilkins' ability to rush the passer from the interior added into the equation?

Just back in 2023, Wilkins posted a career-high 9.0 sacks with the Dolphins before a down year with the Raiders in 2024. Joining forces with Parsons, Xavier McKinney, Rashan Gary and company could give him the boost to get right back to his ceiling.

Aside from Wilkins, the Packers could opt to plan for an Asante Samuel Jr. signing. This doesn't quite count as a last-minute signing, since Samuel is planning to sign with a team for the latter half of the year. However, for the Packers to do all of their homework and get an offer ready to go would be in their best interest.

Cornerback is still a need for the Packers, whose depth there is no where near where they'd like it to be. The team is really banking on Keisean Nixon and Nate Hobbs to carry the load. Behind them, though, former wide receiver Bo Melton has converted and is in his first season at the position.

There is not a ton of valuable depth in that room, and Samuel is arguably the best free agent at the position. It's just a matter of him fully recovering from last year's injury and passing his physical, which doctors have agreed will very likely happen in the coming weeks.
