As the Green Bay Packers continue to push for a spot in the NFC playoffs, it's become apparent that general manager Brian Gutekunst will need to add reinforcements along the defensive line.

The Packers made one move already, signing Jordon Riley from the New York Giants' practice squad, but more help may be required after Devonte Wyatt suffered a season-ending injury last week against the Detroit Lions.

It's a devastating blow for the Packers' defense, as Wyatt appeared to be on the verge of a breakout season with four sacks and 27 total tackles in 10 games.

After the game, defensive end Micah Parsons summed it up, saying the Packers must "try to replace someone that's unreplaceable." However, there is a player available in free agency who could make a difference. Enter Christian Wilkins.

Packers should consider a surprising late-season move for Christian Wilkins

A former first-rounder by the Miami Dolphins, Wilkins made a name for himself by clogging up running lanes and wreaking havoc on the inside for opposing quarterbacks. His best season came in 2023, with nine sacks and 65 tackles in 17 games.

Many will wonder, "If a player like Wilkins is this talented and dominant, why is he not a team?"

The answer is two-fold, with injuries and a supposed locker room issue being the main culprits. Wilkins hasn't played in a live game since October 2024 after suffering a season-ending foot fracture with the Las Vegas Raiders.

After a lengthy injury disagreement saga with the Raiders this past offseason, Wilkins was released by the team in July. However, as more details emerged, his release was also due to an incident with a former teammate.

Wilkins, without a doubt, is a risk, given his health issues and uncertainty within the locker room. At the same time, he has the talent to help a Packers defense without Wyatt.

Green Bay may stick to its usual path in these scenarios, relying on younger players along with lesser-known free agents. However, new team president Ed Policy has shown a willingness to be aggressive, with the addition of Parsons before the start of the season being the ultimate proof.

Only time will tell whether the Packers consider adding Wilkins, but make no mistake, he is the late-season addition who can help this team make a run.
