Adding Javon Hargrave to the defensive line was a clear win for the Green Bay Packers. Pairing the two-time Pro Bowler with Devonte Wyatt will immediately boost the pass rush. Securing another quality interior defender also allows Jonathan Gannon the option of playing a 3-4 front, with rookie Chris McClellan getting some run at nose tackle.Â
For the whole thing to work, though, Hargrave has to get back to being his productive self after a down year with the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers don't need him to make another Pro Bowl, but they do need more than the 3.5 sacks and four tackles for loss Hargrave recorded in 2025.Â
He can definitely give them that, even at age 33, entering his 11th season. Green and Gold fans are rightfully excited for Hargrave's arrival. But he has to deliver. If he doesn't, the entire defensive front could fall apart.
Packers need Javon Hargrave to regain some version of prior form
There are valid concerns over Hargrave's 2025 decline. He was coming off a season-ending triceps injury suffered early in the 2024 campaign and delivered a performance that, while solid enough, was a far cry from his Eagles peak. A lackluster season in Green Bay would cast a grim light on the pre- and post-injury divide.Â
At the same time, the Packers can also hope that another year removed from the injury will give Hargrave some extra juice. Under Jonathan Gannon as Eagles defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2022, Hargrave recorded 18.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, and 34 quarterback hits, per Pro Football Reference. That is easily the best two-year stretch of his career.Â
The hope, then, is that Hargrave can recover some playmaking thump to contribute to a Packers pass rush that will desperately need it. Micah Parsons' injury absence, expected to extend at least into mid-October, will require all hands on deck.Â
If the pressure isn't coming off the edge, the defensive interior will have to pick up the slack. Getting a bit more out of Hargrave, whose career-high in sacks is double Wyatt's, is therefore crucial.Â
There is a world where the Packers withstand a disappointing year from Hargrave, but some combination of best-case outcomes would have to occur around him. Say Wyatt stays healthy and finally breaks out. McClellan is everything the team hoped for, and possibly more. The young edge rushers hold down the fort until Parsons returns, and his debut isn't pushed back even further.
Asking for even two of those ideal scenarios would be a lot. Operating an effective 3-4 front will be difficult if Hargrave can't carry his weight. As the roster stands now, Gannon could struggle to find adequate personnel. Especially with Parsons' absence removing another veteran from the room, the Packers also need Hargrave to help lead a young defense.Â
They have every reason to believe he will deliver, but his age and health history present a delicate barrier between a thriving defensive line and a crumbling one.
