The Green Bay Packers knew they would be without Micah Parsons for a while but didn't do nearly enough to hold during his absence. Sure, rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton has flashed in training camp, but expecting him to have a featured role in Year 1 may be too much to ask. Similarly, Lukas Van Ness has at last shown promise after failing to live up to his draft billing in past seasons. Nevertheless, he remains an unproven commodity.
When you add it all up, it's easy to see why the Packers have been urged to add a grizzled veteran to bolster their pass rush dating back to the early stages of the offseason. The trouble is that if they want to do it now, they're running out of options.
A.J. Epenesa signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in June, and Cameron Jordan returned to the New Orleans Saints after weighing their options. More recently, Jadeveon Clowney returned to the Houston Texans, the team that drafted him first overall in 2023. That potentially leaves Green Bay with one player who can give the pass rush a legitimate boost: Von Miller.
The Packers need to set their sights on Von Miller to fortify the pass rush
Since becoming a free agent in March, Von Miller has yet to find a new team. After 14 NFL seasons, it's fair to assume that his age may be playing a role. Then again, he was a productive player for the Washington Commanders in 2026, registering 9.0 sacks in 17 games with three starts.
One big reason for Miller's success at 37 is that he had a rotational role last year. He knows he's no longer a youngster, so he won't be nearly as productive as a starter.
With the Packers, Miller would be part of a rotation that includes the aforementioned Dennis-Sutton, Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, and Micah Parsons once he eventually is back in the fold. But one added benefit of bringing in the eight-time Pro Bowl nod is that he could serve as a mentor for all the other Green Bay pass-rushers.
The Packers had better hurry if they don't want to miss out on Von Miller
If the Packers indeed want to bring in reinforcements, they'd better do it quickly. Otherwise, they're at risk of missing out on Miller. Just hours before the writing of this article, he hinted at a potential return with the Buffalo Bills when he posted a picture of himself wearing the Bills uniform and a caption that said, "Unfinished Business."
Clearly, the second overall pick in 2011 wasn't talking about the Commanders, the team he suited up for last year. And if the interest is mutual, a reunion with Buffalo could be in the works.
Of course, Miller could have just expressed a preference, but there's also a chance he's been engaged in contract talks with the Bills.
Either way, the Packers must act now, or their pass rush (or lack thereof) could be the one thing that holds them back early in the 2026 season. And once Parsons comes back, it could be too late.
