Packers would be falling into massive trap by signing Cooper Kupp

It's no secret that the Green Bay Packers need wide receiver help.

They passed on making Davante Adams an offer despite a report from ESPN's Jason Wilde that Adams was "open" to a reunion.

DK Metcalf made the most sense, as his speed and deep-threat ability made him a perfect Christian Watson replacement. Again, the Packers passed. Even Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who could've provided a short-term fix until Watson returns, is headed to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Packers didn't even swing and miss. They never swung the bat.

That could soon change. According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Packers are among the teams interested in signing Cooper Kupp, who is now a free agent after the Los Angeles Rams released him. Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston notes, "Green Bay is one to watch."

OK, then. While adding a former first-team All-Pro sounds like a fun idea, Kupp isn't the answer to the Packers' wide receiver conundrum.

Packers should steer well clear of signing Cooper Kupp in free agency

The Packers' best veteran options have gone. If they plan to upgrade the wide receiver room, they should wait until next month's draft. Kupp will likely land good money on the open market, but his next team will ultimately overpay for his services.

While Kupp is still a solid receiving option, he is no longer the player who won the receiving triple crown four years ago. Kupp has battled injuries throughout his NFL career and hasn't suited up for a full 17-game season since 2021. The veteran has missed 18 games over the past three years, and his production has also declined.

Last year, Kupp caught 67 passes for 710 yards and six touchdowns. While those numbers are OK, he posted his lowest yards total since 2018. His receiving numbers have dropped each year since his triple-crown season.

It's exactly why the Los Angeles Rams parted ways with Kupp and paid Davante Adams $22 million per year, who is older than him. Money wasn't the issue for the Rams. They just believe Adams can offer their offense significantly more.

Kupp operates primarily in the slot, which is Jayden Reed's role in Matt LaFleur's offense. Would the Packers move Reed outside more frequently to accommodate Kupp?

Green Bay needs a field stretcher with the speed to replace Watson. Adams wouldn't have provided that, but he has the man-coverage-beating qualities this offense lacked, and he is still playing at a high enough level to become Jordan Love's go-to target.

Signing Kupp would feel like a desperate move by a Packers team running out of options in the wide receiver market. With several teams reportedly interested, Kupp could land good money.

The Packers should look elsewhere.
