A trade for Josh Sweat almost makes too much sense.
The disgruntled Arizona Cardinals pass-rusher would be a perfect fit for the Green Bay Packers, who still have questions along the front seven, especially with Micah Parsons expected to miss the start of the season.
Now, it suddenly feels like a real possibility. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, teams have reached out to the Cardinals about Sweat. Schultz then dropped a notable line about Sweat's close relationship with Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
"The Cardinals have received trade calls on Pro Bowl DE Josh Sweat," reports Schultz. "Sweat had 12 sacks last season in his first year with Arizona and had a close relationship with Jonathan Gannon, whom the Cardinals moved on from."
The Jonathan Gannon connection could help Packers land Josh Sweat trade
It's important to note that Schultz said the Cardinals have received calls, not that they're actively seeking a trade partner. But the Gannon connection is real and could work in the Packers' favor.
Sweat played under Gannon in Philadelphia and then followed him to Arizona in 2025.
It's no coincidence that three of Sweat's four highest sack totals (12 sacks in 2025, 11 in 2022, and 7.5 in 2021) came in Gannon's system. He also made a Pro Bowl in 2021 while playing for the Eagles.
Sweat has spoken highly of his former defensive coordinator and head coach, and as Schultz notes, they have a "close relationship." He's also not the first player to have such high praise for the Packers' new defensive coordinator.
Free-agent addition Javon Hargrave said he enjoyed his "best years" under Gannon, which is a big reason why he came to Green Bay.
Linebacker Zaire Franklin, whom the Packers acquired via trade a few days before free agency, said he was hoping to "get back with Gannon" this offseason.
It will come as no surprise if Sweat also pushes for a move to Green Bay to reunite with Gannon.
The real question is whether the Packers have any interest in a deal (they absolutely should), whether the Cardinals would entertain any offers, and whether the two could ultimately negotiate a package. Time will tell.
But it makes so much sense for Green Bay. Sweat has true double-digit sack potential, especially in Gannon's system. Alongside fourth-round pick Dani Dennis-Sutton, Lukas Van Ness, and, eventually, a returning Parsons, the Packers would have a championship-caliber pass rush.
